In the event of a fire, natural venting systems open air ways, using natural air flow dynamics to remove smoke, which is arguably the biggest threat to life. This can be attained by opening windows or vents, an automatic opening vent (AOV) or, where there is no external wall, a vertical smoke shaft.
AK Fire natural venting systems provide a reliable and cost-effective method of meeting the requirements of Approved Document B. In the event of a fire, smoke detectors will activate the natural smoke venting system on that floor. This creates a natural air flow to purge smoke from the building and exhaust it into the atmosphere, offering a safe means of escape for occupants, with greater visibility and access for fire fighters.

Mechanical Smoke Ventilation Systems
Mechanical Smoke Ventilation systems can aid the safe escape of occupants’ and allow adequate access for firefighters. Our Mechanical Smoke Ventilation Systems are an alternative method to Natural Smoke Venting. In the event of a fire, mechanical smoke vent systems offer the ultimate in smoke control as they remove smoke from the building, thus aiding the occupants’ means of escape and providing suitable access for firefighting services.
This type of smoke extraction system comprises of a mechanical extract shaft that serves the common corridor and/ or lobby. When smoke it detected within a protected lobby, only the fire damper to the smoke shaft on the fire floor will open (all other dampers will remain locked shut). In turn, the vent at the head of the staircase will open allowing the smoke to be removed and make up air for the smoke extraction system. The fan at the top of the mechanical smoke shaft extracts the smoke and prevents migration of smoke into the adjacent compartments.

Corridor Environmental System
The requirement for improved energy efficiency has resulted in the increased use of centralised heating systems, boilers and hot water pipework in multi storey residential schemes. Whilst this provides benefits for effective heat and water distribution it can also result in significant heat build-up affecting residents and operatives working in the building.
Fire Design Solutions has designed an efficient and cost-effective solution of integrating our Corridor Environmental System with our advanced mechanical smoke ventilation system for day to day environmental ventilation – venting hot air from the common corridors and stairs, and reducing the temperature to an acceptable level.
Corridor environmental ventilation is achieved through the mechanical extraction of heat from the corridor into the smoke shafts using motorised dampers that open whilst the system is operational. A thermostat activates operation once a pre-set temperature is achieved. In the event of a fire, the system reverts to fire safety mode to remove smoke from the building.
At AK Fire we design the Corridor Environmental System to maximise heat removal, providing occupants and maintenance operatives with comfortable internal temperatures.
We can help you achieve substantial cost savings wherever we can utilise the smoke shaft during the initial construction stage, thus allowing us to complete installation in just one exercise.
